Hat Burning Workshop
Hat Burning Workshop
Join us for an adults-only workshop where one instructor will guide you through using wood-burning tools to create custom designs on hats. All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary—just bring your creativity!
Attendance: 8
I took a vacation to the Carolinas and while there, my friend and I attended a hat burning workshop. I justified the price by telling myself that I would teach this in the library. The adult services coordinator then approved of the program and the hat purchase.
I set up the room with 4 tables spaced out near the outlets. Each table has two wood burners, various tips, two scraps of felt, two wet paper towels, and chalk.
Registrants had the option of sending their designs to me before the workshop. With the help of my colleague Alyssa, we were able to chalk their designs onto their hat before the class started - which was a huge time-saver.
At the beginning of the workshop, as they were checking in, I let them choose which hat they would like to work with. Once all 8 attendees were present, I walked them through the concept and stressed the safety protocols of working with wood burners. I also explained that occasionally they will need to clean their tips with the wet paper towel, as there may be a build up of melted felt.
After having them draw their design on the hat with chalk, they began using the burning tool. I had them first practice using the tool on the scrap of felt so they could get the feel of how much pressure to use, how quickly it would take them to drag the tool along, and which tips did what. After they felt comfortable, they were able to confidently bring their design to life. Check out their beautiful works below!
